Understanding Groups

Follow

Dashboard groups are created by the administrator to separate dashboards and provide a layer of dashboard security among users. They also provide a frame work in which newly created entities can be published and shared to other users that have access to particular groups.

The tree structure utilizes both a top-down and bottom-up approach depending on the circumstances:

The publication of entities is top-down. When an entity is published to a parent group then it can be accessed by users who are members of that group or by any of its child groups. For more information on publication see Understanding the Publication Process.

The assignment of user permissions is bottom-up. When a user is a member of a child group then they are automatically a member of the parent groups also. This needs to be paid particular attention when organizing groups for security filters, as it can cause information to be incorrectly distributed if not done properly.
